Default Advice needed for jelly roll race quilt

I admit, I'm probably over thinking this! I have a jelly roll which consists mostly of black, red, and white prints with just a couple of gray prints, too. When sewing the initial long strip should I avoid having 2 of the same colors together? Instead of R, R, B, W should it be R, B, W, R for example?

I was all set to tear into this tonight, but didn't get too far. :-)

I tried to keep colors apart, then they came back together. it's random to me, so just wing it and have a good time.

Don't you cut 18 inches off the first strip? so you'll have a different color on the first anyway. if that's right. LOL

I have done 2 so far and I just sewed the strips together as they came off the roll. Cut off about 18 inches of the first strip, that is what gives it the staggering pattern. I did the #2 version where you add a 2 1/2 inch square between each one. I then also did the ZigZag cut. I loved the finished project. It's not hard. Just go with it.

If you try not to get the same to match, you'll go insane. The best part about a jelly roll race to me is seeing what comes out in the end. If you've made up your own, just assemble it like they do on a jelly roll. Like fabrics are often two alike together and go in a descending order. Or you could just randomly pick them up. Have fun with it.

When you double over your fabrics you'll end up with the same fabrics touching anyway, so don't go crazy trying to control this thing. It's going to be somewhat random, so don't stress, just sew.

Thanks so much for the advice. I will sew those strips straight off the roll and see what I get! :-)

I think that is what is so much fun about the Jelly Roll quilts. You shouldn't think too much about what strips are next to each other or how it will end up. It will be beautiful. Just take the strips as they come off the roll and have fun. Don't overthink anything. Just sew!!!
