Lots of great suggestions! I've wanted to do a churn dash for a few quilts now but I knew it wasn't the style of the recipients so haven't - I also envision doing a churn dash for my own future DD 2nd quilt - once she it in a toddler bed.

I LOVE Irish chains, that is a strong contender.

Peggi - I love that quilt - and wow does Jenny simplify the process, I never would have thought to just slice one like she did - will be on my list if not for my friends baby.

I feel like it's gotta be the irish chain...there really is not much at the quilt store and I was hoping to finish it soon since I assume I'll be too pregnant to do much soon.

Hmmm, since you're good at applique, would it work to use a green or blue gingham check, alternating with white? Then you'd have the white squares, and the gingham would look fresh and crisp with the white.

You could add tiny rickrack, too, on the seam lines.

Peckish - just love your quilt with the squares set on point and then the border works so well with it.

I made a small quilt for a neighbors daughter last year and she chose yellow and gray this is what I created. I wanted the baby to know they were loved, so I did hearts. I tried to mix up the different colors and prints so there are only I think 3 blocks the same.

I'm not sure about the "grabability" of the rickrack for this particular quilt; I sewed all the curves down. I actually used the rickrack to cover the seam between the charm squares and the border, because when I added the border I necessarily cut corners off the squares.
I have seen the giant rickrack at Missouri Star, Joann's, and a regional craft chain in my area called Craft Warehouse. I'm sure you could also find it online. It's officially called "jumbo" rickrack.

My niece asked for muted colors and muted gray in her last baby quilt. I did a simple Irish chain in soft gray and white. I was quite pleased with the way it turned out, and, more importantly, so was the niece!
