    Default apparel versus quilting cotton

I notice when I shop at a large chain store, they have a corner &wall that is devoted to "quilting cottons". Most of these cost in the $8 up range. If you go further into the store, you see "apparel cottons" also 100% cotton, and lots of these are cheaper, but there are some really nice prints. Now, I was taught to grab a handful of fabric, squeeze to check for wrinkling, and rub between my knuckles, for quality( gets the sizing out). I have to admit, I don't always think the quilting cottons are better quality, and I always just buy what works for me anyway. But I am interested in what others think, is there really a difference in quality? Does it make a difference? I'm not talking quilt shop versus chain store.Which is better quality?

I think it is more about thread count than quality. The batting may beard on a more open weave.

I always stop by the shirtings and other cotton fabrics when I visit stores that separate them from quilting cotton. Sometimes there are great bargains and prints that you don't see in the quilting section. The thread count is at least as high as the quilting fabrics and they work well for quilting. I've also used some home décor fabric that was similar in weight to quilting cotton.

I agree. As long as it's 100% cotton, it's ok with me.
