I am trying to learn applique and I am having trouble with fusable. I tried using a fusible but when do a simple decorative stitch around it the needle and thread gum up. Am I using the wrong fusable? What have others done? I have a large applique project coming up and I want to practice on some small fabrics so I am trying diffferent methods.

I also have damage done to my non-thimbled fingers from that. I use simple two different methods. The washable glue in the area leaving the edge where I want to sew (like the glue basting I have seen on a you tube video for binding)clear of glue so all I am sewing is fabric to fabric, or strips of web fusing avoiding the edges, just enough to hold the appliqued piece in place while sewing it down. Since I am also still a newbie at the applique those are the two methods I am finding to be the best and easiest for me to get the smoothest edges.

What kind of fusible are you using? That will make a big difference. The right kind won't gum up your needle.

I use Steam a Seam2 & never had a gummy problem.

there are many fusables on the market= some are not for sewing-
heat & bond lite, wonderunder, steam a seam lite, and misty fuse are all lite weight ones meant to be used and stitched through-
the regual heat & bond and steam a seam's are not meant to be sewn through- usually used for wall hangings- things that will not be washed- are a permenent bond-
the lite products after stitching can be laundered- and all the stiffness washes away.
for gummed up needles i usually have a small square of white flannel- i put sewing machine oil on and use it to wipe the build up off of the needle.
the fusables that are not meant to be stitched through tend to be pretty stiff---and they stay that way.

I use white glue to hold my pieces in place. I apply a very thin layer only where I want it to stay with a small paint brush or qtip
