I'm making a large throw quilt of simple squares = 66" X 77". The recipient's favorite color is blue so it is predominately blue with a few purple and turquoise squares scattered in for interest.

I have cut my 28 fabrics into 6" strips. Should I subcut and sew the 168 6" squares together the time consuming way OR sew two strips together (a light and a dark) before subcutting to save assembly time. But this would limit the randomness of fabric placement.

Which way would you go?

With that many squares and if you cut them all individually, you could make a color pattern design with them (i.e. a heart shape using a certain color)

I'm with Bonnie Hunter, I can sew a straight line for a few inches, but it's harder to sew straight for 42 inches! I personally prefer more random/scrappy, so would sew them together individually.

I would at least cut the strips into half the width of fabric if you are sewing strips together first. Increases the randomness and is easier to handle.

Subcutting would lend itself to assembly-style sewing. You'd be done in no time.

I would probably sew them individually if I wanted a more random look.

My brain prefers a simple pattern over randomness. Try laying out a simple arrangement of lines or outlines using your favorite high contrast colored squares .
