Default Batting - Dimples up or down?

I know this has been asked and answered numerous times - which side of the batting goes against the backside of the top and which side on the backing? I think it is the dimples against the top and smoother side against the backing???

    Thanks in advance.

    Does it really matter?

It's pimples up, dimples down. And yes, it does matter.
Here's a Jamie Wallen video that explains why. He also shows how to determine which side goes up.

i'm not convinced by his logic.
you can get bearding on the front, too.
needle size, thread weight, and thread count in the fabrics used also play a part.

i try to remember to do a test using large scraps of backing, batting and top fabric.
if i can't replace a batting that beards, i'd rather have it on the back.

If it was important the batting would have back or front printed on it. Many award winning quilters have never thought about front and back of batting.

I was taught 'show your dimples, hide your pimples' Meaning the dimple side is the side the needle went into the batting during manufacturing. The 'pimple' side or bumpy side is where the needle came out on the bottom. I was taught that you should put the batting into the quilt sandwich the same way....dimples up.
However, I agree with Patrice. With the new fancy battings available these days, it probably no longer matters.

I *think* it matters if you're using batting with scrim. There are a lot of battings out there that don't have scrim. My rule of thumb is if I can't see pimples or dimples, it doesn't matter.

I have never thought there was a difference in how I placed the batting. Once my quilts are quilted and washed there is no tell tale trace of which direction I laid the batting.
