if you use 2.5", you will have 640" minus seams
if you use 3", you will have 520" minus seams
if you use 3.5", you will have 457" minus seams

    1. straighten cut ends before measuring, trim selvedges

    2. formula to see how much you will get from any length of fabric:

fabric width _____ / strip width _____ = total number of strips _____
total number of strips _____ x fabric width _____ = total length of strips after sewing together _____

how long will the center strips be? (2, sometimes 3)
    length of fabric (36" in this case) ____ x 1.414" = _____ (50.9 in this case)

the total length of strips you get is the same whether straight of grain or on bias, but you have more seams in bias binding as the strips get shorter because you move from the center toward the corners. but both center strips are more than 50" each so you'll have plenty with one yard of 40" fabric.

I make 2.5" cuts the length of the fabric, I then cut each end on a 45 degree angle and sew the ends together. I then fold and press the entire length in half...sew on one side of the quilt with 1/4" selvage; then fold over to the other side of quilt and either hand sew or decorative machine stitch. Based on my practice but using your 3" cut this is my calculation: One yard should be ample for binding based on 36" (one yard) X 44" (width); 44" divided by 3" = 11 strips.....11 strips X 36" = 396" ; however, you said 'bias' binding. My experience with bias binding is not so good, so I can't help you with that. Good luck!

i believe the original question was for bias binding. If you use the tube technique then you will need a 30 1/2 square of fabric to make 384" of bias binding cut 3" wide.
