I'm just wondering how many of us pick fabric for a quilt and use fabric from the same collection. Or do you really not care if it's all from the same collection as long as they go together? I always find myself staying within the collection because I think it won't match if I stray. the only time I really mix and match is when I use batiks....they are all very similar so I figure it's ok. Am I crazy?

I don't ususally buy a collection. I may pick up two or sometimes 3 in a collection but then just add the rest on my own.
I like being to make my own "color" scheme. Sometimes the collections are too overly matched without contrast and I love to have contrast in my quilts too.

I don't think I have ever bought a whole collection. I will buy 3, generally. Unless it is a scrappy quilt or batiks or a strip quilt, I have a tendency to stick to 3 different main fabrics. If i need more I then use a filler fabric.

The quilt magazines today seem to "push" quilts that are made from collections. I suppose they get subsidies from the fabric manufacturers to survive. Making a quilt from a collection of fabrics is not traditional; this is a new phenomenon. If you look at quilt magazines from even 10 years ago, you will see that all the quilts are made from fabrics selected by the individual quilt maker from whatever was on the market at the time.

I've been quilting off and on for 20+ years, and I've never made a quilt solely from a manufacturer's collection of fabrics.

The little colored dots on the selvedges will help you pick out fabrics that will match... I like to have a small, med print along with light, med and dark colored fabrics...

Ordering online, it does help to order from fabric lines as everyone's monitors show colors so differently and coming up with matches can be very difficult.

I have only made 1 from a collection - my pioneer one. I like the idea of a collection though and may make more that way.

I don't like collections. In many cases the colors are not contrasting enough for my taste. I don't mind the same print in different colors, but it has to be colors in totaly different families.

I have only rarely used a collection - a couple of times I've done small projects with charm packs supplemented by yardage from my stash. There are usually some fabrics in every collection that I don't like so I prefer to mix and match my own. Having said that, I've just ordered some of the collection of Moda 'Rouenneries' to make a throw for our sofa so I can be sucked in too! But they are especially beautiful, I think, and I like the French connection!
