I have used sheets for may years without a problem. But, the 'cheaper' sheets are better. They usually have a lower thread count so they are easier to quilt through. Added bonus is that a sheet is usually a lot bigger than a quilt top, so you can buy a larger sheet and get a couple throw backings out of it!

When I first started quilting, my sister in law convinced me that using bed sheets was cheaper than fabric by the yard. The applique quilt that I made, 30+ years ago, is literally disintegrating.

Recently, I made a couple of charity kids quilts with a fleece backing . Quilted with my DSM & liked the results.

Yes, to sheets for backings. Just don't get a high thread count and you'll do fine!

I am a longarmer and use sheets all the time with good results. They will not wear out before the top does, damage your machine or be impossible to quilt. The quilt police may not like sheets but they work just fine for me.
