Yes, Milleroch... great ideas on the teaching methods...same goes with their art work..."Tell me about your picture."

As cute as the fabric is, there is a gray line between the generations who "knew" Dick and Jane and the recent generations who learned with Sesame Street, Electric Co., "Big Books", and without phonics, etc.

Some will have NO idea who D&J are. I think the nostalgic fabric is for a specific generation... many who are now on Medicare!

Of course there was nothing wrong with D&J unless you figure in the stereotypical figures and jobs, etc. It was a slice of life (not all lives) of the times. That reading "method" and many, many great teachers, taught millions of kids to read.

Okay... I'm off my soapbox... back to the sewing machine...

It doesn't make any difference about the "time zone." The method works with any pictures. A lot has to do with time spent w/a loving adult, verbal exchanges, language development, etc. etc.. Time spent with an adult is the most powerful incentive in the world and has the highest impact on learning to read.

I have this fabric too. My plan is to alternate a story book page with a pinwheel block (9 inch blocks). I don't know about sashing yet as it's still in the planning stage. And I'm planning to make a piano keyboard border. I'm slow & a new quilter.....so who knows???

I made an apron for myself and my sister. They hang proudly in our kitchens.
