Digitizing a quilt pattern...what is it and how is it done? I don't need all the technical jargon, just a simple explanation the computer challenge can grasp.

Digitizing is a term commonly used in conjunction with machine embroidery.

It is creating the design for embroidery there are many designs with quilting
motifs.

Digitizing is turning any line drawing or vector art into and embroidery design. There are many types of emboidery designs and all are made with some type of embroidery software for digitizing

How you go about doing it would depend on your software. With my 5D I can bring a picture in as a vector image and click a button that tells it to create a line of stitching with any stitch type around the outine and it will do it automatically. The eq7/eqstitch program requires that you draw the design using the same tools that you would for a quiltblock and then you tell it what stitch you would like to use to outline your designs.

If you explain why you are asking (are you trying to work on one for your machine, what software do you have) you can get a more detailed answer.

I will not be digitizing as I can just manage my iPad. I have seen the term used and wanted to know about it out of curiosity. Thanks everyone for the information and the link.

I have digitizing software for embroidery designs (Digitizer) and quilting designs (5D). There is a huge learning curve, IMO. I have only created a couple of patterns, and they were simple ones. I do, however, use the software regularly to create quilt labels. The software was very expensive, so it would have been cheaper to just purchase designs online.
