    Default Disappearing 4 patch measurements.

Does anyone know the size I would cut away from center when making a disappearing 4 patch using layer cakes?

You can cut away whatever size you want, as long as you're consistent. I usually find that 1" from the center work well on 4 patches that are 9" square or larger.

I just finished a DP4 quilt a few weeks ago and I cut 1.5 from the center line. But as mentioned before, it really doesn't matter as much only consistency. Have fun and enjoy the "magical" results. You can always make a test block from scraps and see if you like 1", 1.5 or what ever.

Here is an image of a D4P made with layer cakes https://www.favequilts.com/Bed-Size-...th-Layer-Cakes It looks like the link is no longer active, but I was able to find it on Wayback. https://web.archive.org/web/20190328...h-layer-cakes/ Unfortunately, the pictures did not show up for me. It looks like the cuts were made 2 inches from center. I see that several images were saved to pinterest.

Donna Jordan has a free pattern and video called "Twist and Shout" that uses three different D4P blocks. You can see the differences easily and decide which one you prefer.

I took a two day workshop for this when I first started quilting. I cut 1 1/2 from center.
A disappearing four-patch block will be about two inches smaller than the simple 4 patch.

Julienm1 that is a fun way to do D4P. If you vary the shades of the solid it will add some interest.

If you like Disappearing blocks you will like this quilter's videos. She does them all in every variation.
