Default DP9 in 1930's reproduction fabrics

I love (addicted, if I tell the truth) 1930's reproduction fabrics. I have made several scrappy 4 patch quilts, 12 patch quilts and a string quilt. I would love to make a DP9 with my stash. Would it work if all the fabrics were different and I didn't use a solid? Do DP9's need a solid to make it work? I am horrible at picturing what it would look like and I don't have any software on my computer to help me visualize it.

I made a D9P with 9 different fabrics, none of them a solid. Very scrappy looking. If I did it again, I would use the same fabric for all the center squares of the 9 patches, for a more uniform look.

D9P would be very pretty in 30's fabrics. I have made them in christmas, pepper, batiks, modas. They all seem to work out fine in any collection, even scrappy. But, I do think it looks better if the color that "pops" is the same in every center square. Afterall, those are the pieces that are cut the smallest and your minds eye follows them around the quilt.

Maybe do the center in white. It should set off the 1930's.

This is two of the D9P's that I made a few years ago. Used 7 different fabrics and fussy cut the deer using 2 pictures per 9 patch square. on the first one and on the second on I used 9 different colors with the center being white.
