    Default Dresden Plate Question

    Ladies please refresh my memory....
While cleaning out the sewing room closet today I came across 13 Dresden Plate blocks made from what I believe was an American Jane Jelly Roll. Why 13 I have no idea, but I have enough strips left to sash the blocks and will border with something else. My question is, do I remember that I'm suppose to cut away the underneath side of each plate base? If so, do you cut close to the points or start to cut where the point fold start? All help is appreciated!

I just leave the fabric under the Dresden, have done several both ways, trimming the back out starting under the fold of the points and leaving the backs on and have found no big difference. If you are not sure, trim one of your blocks and see if it's what you would like to do. Brenda

I don't cut off any of the underside of the blades.

I do not remove any of the background fabric behind Dresden Plates. Since many of the plate sections are at angles(bias) I think leaving the background in adds stability to the blocks.

I also leave the backing of the plates, but since it's your quilt, if you want to trim under the plates, then do so.

I just leave the fabric behind it.

I sometimes cut away behind applique if I'm going to hand quilt, but these days I mostly machine quilt, so I leave the backing. Would love to see a picture of your quilt when you're finished. I love Dresdens!

I trim the under fabric because I hand quilt and it's less bulk.

I usually leave the underneath fabric but my LA quilter prefers that I cut away the extra fabric.
