    Default Flannel quilt kit

I saw a kit in a catalog recently and began to wonder about using something like this. The fabric would all have to be pre-shrunk wouldn't it. How could this be done with the fabric in the kit precut? Did not seem practical to me although I liked the quilt shown in the picture. Even if the kit were put together and then washed to shrink it, the fabric could and probably would all shrink unevenly. Just wondering...The kit was appliqué not pieced

This is the age old issue of pre washing or not. While it's true that usually flannel shrinks more than cottons, there are plenty of people out there that don't preshrink anything, relying on the quilting to keep everything in order. I have read several times on this board that Harriet Hargrave (a quilter & author I really admire) does not preshrink anything, including flannel.

Our church group received odds and ends of flannel from Robert Kaufman and it wasn't pre-washed. We made baby rag rugs and they shrunk quite a bit but still were cute. I wouldn't buy any kit of flannel.

I've never seen kits that are precut. They just give you the yardage and you need to cut it yourself. Are you referring to the recent connecting threads catalogs with the flannel kits? Those are definitely not precut, they contain the needed yardage and usually a generous amount in case you cut something wrong. The only precuts I have seen in a kit are laser cut applique units, like in some of the Edita Sitar kits. Those are the only items in a kit I have ever seen precut. All the rest of the fabric is yardage and you are expected to cut it down to the units needed for piecing yourself.
