I want to make a 3D Pinwheel quilt. The pattern says to cut 4 five inch squares of both bachground & focus fabric. I'm really good at losing points, so can I cut my focus (pinwheel) fabric at 4.75 instead of 5 inches. I know clear as mud.

I would think it would work the pinwheel would just be floating in the block a little.

Nothing wrong with floating a block. It may help you save your points. When I received blocks from exchanges, they were all various sizes (some at least 1/2" smaller) and I would float them but sewing 4 larger triangles on each side. Being disable, I like to be able to oversize fabric pieces like Eleanor Burns does and trim them down. Just find out if this works for you. Experiment with making a block.

I've done one of these but I can't remember what the dimensions were, I just followed the instructions. The pinwheels turned out fine.

Make a couple of practice blocks out of your scraps to see what works best.

    Mary,
That's what I need to know. Setting on point & using plain blocks really gives it a great look. Now I'll make a second one like yours. Since both couples don't want to know the sex of their baby till it's born I guess I'll need to make two baby boy & two baby girl quilts. If I only make one of each they are sure to have both have the same sex baby. I can always give the extra ones to charity.

I've made the3D pinwheels and they turned out great, did no lose my points. I has been a couple of years now and I don't remember the size I made. You could save yourself some time, instead of making 4 quilts just make two, using pastel colors, light yellow, green, blue and pink, that way the quilt will work for either boy or girl, or just use yellow and green.

Could someone give some simple written directions? I have it figured out mostly, but don't know how far to fold over the tip of the pinwheel. I would think you would want to keep that out of the center seams. There is enough fabric there already.
