I need some help. I am making a quilt blocks that is raw edged applique. Can it be washed if I do a blanket stitch around all the edges? Can I do a running stitch around all the edges? Can I use one color of thread to do all the stitching, I don't want to buy all different colors of thread. Help Please!

I usually pick one color for all of the applique work, and go for it :D

I don't have problems with the edges if they have been sewn, the fraying if any is very minimal. The adhesive helps to keep the fraying from being an issue.

A running stitch may allow more fraying to happen than a blanket stitch. :D:D:D

I use a blanket stitch or zig zag and have had no problems with washing.

I use Steam A Seam 2 fusible & YLI Wonder invisible thread for stitching around edges.

When you say you sew the edges do you mean using the blanket stitch? What color thread would you use for red, blues, green, yellows?

You can use black thread for a blanket stitch and it will look good.

There are basically four different methods for finishing the edges of fusible applique.

You can use invisible thread or matching thread and a straight stitch just inside the edge of the applique. You can use invisble thread or matching thread and do a tiny zig zag. You can use matching thread and do a satin stitch or blanket stitch. You can use a single color of thread on the whole project and do the blanket stitch.

I wouldn't use invisible thread on baby quilts or bed quilts in general. If you have an end they're pokey and it comes undone too easy.

I have used the blanket stitch, the zigzag (assorted width) and I have done a topstitch close to the edge for a true raw edge look. It all depends on the effect you want to have. As for color, I like to work with variegated threads on appliques.
