Since my truck was so crammed full for the trip, there was no room for my sewing machine or any project (other than some yarn and a crochet hook) to work on. This show is six weekends long and is now getting ready for the third weekend. I have been crocheting up a storm, but that's getting a bit boring. Any suggestions for a quilting project that doesn't require buying a sewing machine and more fabric than I have room to deal with?

Time to embrace the charms of English Paper Piecing....a hexie quilt maybe. That will keep you busy and it doesn't take up room (well...until you stitch them all together).

I agree with earthwalter, hexies are the way to go. I wouldn't worry too much about stitching them together, just make hexies - lots of them

So far I don't have any fabric either. Lol! Was thinking I might see if I could find a jelly roll that struck my fancy. Drove by a shop the other day that I want to check out. I think it was in Mt. Pleasant, PA which isn't very far from the Faire site here.

When I am on the go, which is very seldom, I take my hexes with me.

I have done various hand projects while on the road, including Sashiko, redwork, applique and hand-quilting. I try to keep the projects no larger than 18". The applique is usually a Hawaiian quilting block and the hand quilting is usually a whole cloth pillow top. I tried hexies, but never could get into it.

Just visited Quilt Patch, Etc. in Mt. Pleasant, PA. It is a delightful shop! Got a small ruler and cutting mat and a pretty jelly roll. Think I will try a multi patch hand stitched scrappy with 2-1/2" squares.

One inch hexie papers use a 2 1/2 inch square. When making my scrappy GFG, I bought strips and could get 2 flowers from a strip (had leftovers for another project). I got the Fiskars XL punch at Joann's on sale and used 110 weight cardstock.

I LOVE hand applique. I'm currently working on this really sweet little flowers & ladybugs applique baby quilt by Desiree's Designs. Have yet to use my sewing machine. Just need a handful of fat quarters & 1 1/8 yrds of fabric for the background. I haven't even needed the background fabric yet. Just been making the applique designs. Everything except my Clover mini iron and homemade ironing surface fits in a small cosmetics bag (thread, embroidery scissors, milliner needles, Perfect Circles and templates I've made myself, markers, folded pattern, folded freezer paper & fat quarters). For my ironing surface, I use a roll-out no-sew pad that I just put on a hard surface & I'm ready to iron. I iron all my pieces at night before bed when it's too dark to sew and then I just grab my little bag the next morning and have a whole day's worth of work ready to go. Here's what I've got so far. Note: nothing is attached yet.
