Default Hexagon and Square Quilt Pattern

I saw this quilt at a local show and I was trying to work out the pattern. It appears to me the hexagons are not true geometric shapes in that the edges receiving the joining square patches are shorter than the other sides. The drafting of it has completely foxed me and so I wondered if anyone could help please?
    Thank you in advance.

Here is a pattern by Missouri Star Quilt CO that is similar...it looks to me like the "hexagons in your quilt really are "snowballed" squares.

Think they are octagons rather than hexagons, as they are 8 sided. I imagine all sides would be the same size, just use squares on every other side (and another octagon on the other sides)

Look like snowballs to me too, but also looks like squares were joined first then the little squares are fussy cut and sewed over the corners creating the snowball block

Oh yeah! I totally see it now, that would be way easier than making octagons and squares!

Thank you both for your suggestions. I hadn't noticed that they were octagonal shapes. I feel rather stupid. Now I must try it out and see what happens. I think papers will be needed? Otherwise it will be challenging to sew on the machine.

Reminds me of the ten-minute block.

I think this quilt was done with English paper piecing, since the squares seem to be fussy cut.
