I want to make a table runner and am in a quandary about the type of fusible to use. I'm using quilting quality fabric. I plan to fuse each side of the table runner with a light-weight fusible "to give it some body," but I don't want the runner to be stiff.

My plan is top stitch two rows around the edges rather than quilt it.

What do you suggest I use?

If I am using a stabilizer, do I need to wash the fabric first?

I prefer to line my table runners with muslin (both fabric prewashed).
Sew it like a bag...leave enough to turn inside out. Trim the corners,
turn then top stitch the edge.

One layer of Pellon fleece interfacing is perfect for me. It is available in both fusible and non fusible.

Thats what I use, prefer non fusible...yes, wash fab (or at least soak for a bit) before sewing to get that initial shrink factor out..then washing after usage is less wrinkly...(what I do)

I much prefer the non fusible, too. It seems that once 25 years ago that a placemat with fusible puckered slightly when it was laundered. The non fusible is clingy when sandwiching so I don't feel the need for fusing.

Thanks for your advice on the fusibles. I was afraid of puckering when being washed.

Muslin may give it the weight but not the stiffness I'm looking for.

I too use the Pelon non-fusible fleece. I wash the fabric and dry it hot before making the topper. Before I started quilting again I bought some place mats at a craft show -- when I washed and dried them the fabric really shrunk and the batting did not. I always remember this when I make my placemats and runners.

You could make a practice sandwich that you edge stitch or finish as a potholder and then wash. Measure first, to see if additional shrinking happens and that would give you an answer for your specific pre-washed fabrics, etc.
I haven't seen puckering from the fusible interfacing.
