    Smile Making Placemats

I am making some placemats and want to applique the hearts on so it also works as quilting. I usually use batting in my placemats but now I'm wondering if it would be to thick to applique through. What do you use in placemats?

I would consider doing the applique hearts on your placemats before quilting. It should be much easier to quilt this way.

If you are doing straight stitch appliqué with 80/20 batt inside it will be fine. If you plan to use a fancy appliqué stitch, best make a sample first. Sometimes fancy stitches through quilt batt bog the machine down and pattern won’t advance even with opening up the stitch length.

Depending on your machine, the blanket stitch is usually doable with the full sandwich.

Thanks, I think I will do like I usually do and applique first and then quilt. I know I can do that without making a mess.

If you make a few samples of just small pieces of fabric and batting this will help you find what is the best way to make your placemats and what is the easiest to make with your batting and how you sewing machine does on your project.
