    Hello,
I am new to the quilting world. Can someone tell me what is the diference between a Jelly Roll, Charm and Fat Quarter.
And when would you use each.
I know this is a very basic question but I get different answers when I do a search.
    Thanks

    Lets see:
    A Charm - a 5x5 inch square
A Jelly Roll - a roll of strips 2.5 inches x WOF (Width of Fabric, usually 44 inches). There are usually 40 in a roll.
A Fat Quarter - a piece of fabric that measures about 18x21/22 inches.

Each one can be used in different quilting patterns. The Charms are great if you want to have a piece of each fabric in a line.

There are books that have been written specifically for each type of project, but the uses for each aren't limited.

    Hello Jen!
Jelly Rolls are typically 2.5 inch strips that coordinate all rolled up.
Charms are different fabrics usually 5 inch square.
Fat quarter is a piece of fabric 18 X 22 inch. Rather than cut a quarter of a yard it's cut longer and half the width.
If you go to Moda Bake Shop you can get tons of ideas! Moda came out with all the "dessert" type cuts.
    Hope this helps. :D

A jelly roll-(42) 2 1/2 inch strips of one color or one fabric line, originated by Moda fabrics

Charm- a charm is an individually cut piece of fabric, they come in 4 inch packs, and 5 inch packs. A charm pack will be 40 or so 5inch or 4inch squares.

Fat Quarter - a quarter yard of fabric cut the "fat" way, 18 inches by 22 inches instead of 9 inches by 44 inches.

All of these are used when you want a small piece of fabric, not all of the same yardage or pattern.

If you go to the Moda website, they give free patterns using these "pre-cuts".

Thank you for the quick replies. I get overwhelmed when I got to the quilt store. At times I buy entire yards of different fabrics, when what I think I really needed is a charms or fat quarters:oops: .
Since finding this board I have learned sooooooo much:-D .
    Once again thanks.

Double check the jelly rolls, quite a few now only have 20 strips to them instead of the 40 that we are accustomed too. So the price may not be as good a deal as you would think  :D:D:D

I am going to the Mid Atlantic Quilt Festival. Do you find good bargains there?
