Default Is it okay? Topstitch vs piecing thread

I have a few quilt tops to quilt on my DSM, mainly straight line quilting. Is it okay to use my piecing thread for quilting or should I use the quilting/topstitch thread? I have both so its not like I have to go buy either. Just wondering.

Yes, you can definitely use your piecing thread for quilting. I do it all the time. It will not show up as much as a heavier weight thread, but it will still work perfectly nice to hold together the layers & many novice quilters prefer that as it hides imperfections better than heavier threads. I would make sure that if you are using a cotton thread, that it is at least 50wt for the quilting ("at least" meaning 50wt or lower since thread weights increase in size as the wt decreases).

Thanks Bree123. I'll check the weight of my thread.

I use the same thread for piecing as I do for quilting (50/3). Often the only difference is the color.

If you want the quilting to disappear and be less noticeable, you can use the same color thread as the fabric and/or use a thinner thread (60wt).
If you want the quilting to stand out you can use a contrasting color and/or a heavier thread (40wt)

I have used a 50/3 ply Mettler Silk-finish thread for my quilting for decades.

I go by the color and think I only have regular thread. I have not used the top stitch thread.

Thank you all. I appreciate the info on use of thread weight for effect.

For me it depends on how much I want the quilting to show. The higher the thread number the thinner the thread. I usually use 50 weight that I use for piecing however if I want some decorative effect then I might use a heavier weight thread and change my needle accordingly to a top stitch needle with a larger hole. I almost always use the same color in the top and bobbin as well. White is my go to color most times.

Use whatever works, with whatever you have at hand. Remember, no police here!
