I finally got a bit of information about those "Square Dance Blocks" from a source. I received a letter from one LaVern Newman of the Penninsula Quilters Guild in San Mateo California, who said that many of the ladies who made the blocks are still alive and quilting! The original recipient, Margaret Griffiths, died a few years ago, unfortunately, but Ms. Newman is getting back to me on her surviving grandchildren so I can send them some quilts made with the blocks intended for them.
Attached are the original patterns for the blocks - they were from a book, but unfortunately none of the pages had the book title or author included, so if ANYONE recognizes the font style as particular to one author or publisher, that would be wonderful. I would love to be able to cite the source correctly.
The pattern is titled "Dream Wardrobe".
I haven't even started setting my blocks yet, in case anyone asks. I've had 3 UFO's staring at me on my table that I've been working on. Now I am on the hunt for some JoAnn Fabric Quilting thread #205 Pink - "Dusty Rose" just won't do - in order to finish a birthday present due 2 weeks ago. And a flip-flops quilt due 2 weeks ago for a graduation present. And a homemade sleeping mattress I need to finish before my camping trip in 2 days. (Just needs 1 more bag of stuffing, then I can add the binding!)

So enjoy the original and I will add more details as they arrive.

I cannot express how awesome it is that you took the time to research these blocks AND are going to finish making quilts to go to her intended recipients. Her granchildren are being given a treasure that they probably did not even know existed!!! Margaret Griffiths must be smiling down on you and raining blessings down your way!!!
Thank you for the update and please continue to do so as more info comes in and their quilts progress :D :D :D

That is so cool you tracked down the pattern as well as the family connections to the blocks and plans for making them something memorable and special.

The pics you posted of the the blocks are just the cutest!

What a wonderful thing that you have tracked down the quilters and patterns for the square dance patterns. I'm not sure that I have a plan to use them right now, but the whole thing is so touching and I have downloaded them and printed them out.

Over the past week or so my MIL has cleaned out her sewing room again and I have inherited some wonderful fabric, tools, and embroidered blocks. Oh, and some foundation pieced blocks with asian prints (fan pattern) that are gorgeous. If I get myself together I will take a picture and post some of them so that I can get advice from this fabulous group of people.

    More later!

    P.S.
It is so hot here in Texas right now! Wish I was in the mountains with all my quilting stuff.
Glad you came out of the shadows 8) I see you are from Sugarland. Do you go to the quilt show in Houston?

    That's fantastic!

Thanks for the update! The story behind these blocks makes them just that little bit more special. It's very cool to be involved. :-)
