I have a couple projects (one is full size)to paper piece & need to find a thin backing that isn't removed.

Will need to draw pattern on each 8" backing square,so need the lightest that will work.Can you draw on very light interfacing? TIA

Why not try your interfacing technique and see if you are happy with it? I would think it should work, though you might have a challenge of getting your pattern traced accurately.

Switching to fabric could lose some of the stability that the paper provides, when PPing.

What about using paper, then put a piece of starched fabric on top, held in place with a few lines of long stitches. Then PP in the traditional way overtop of the paper/fabric square.

There is a new stabilizer used for strip quilts. It stays in the quilt and stays soft. Check with your local quilt store. I cannot remember the name of it.

JAF has very light Pellon interfacing I use all the time. I have also used inexpensive muslin. The light interfacing is labeled "Sheer to Lightweight fabrics". Make sure you don't get the fusible.
