Do you guys make coordinating pillow shams for your bed quilts? Or is that just weird?

I just finished my first bed size top (twin) that I am going to keep. Turned out great BTW...the top is headed to the longarmer on Tuesday.

It's going on my spare bed upstairs. Maybe I am too much my mother's daughter but the bed doesnt look "finished" unless it has coordinating shams.

If you do make them, do you quilt the front panel before you put them together or do you just piece it and then put it together?

I have made pillows and pillow shams for all 4 of my children that match their quilts. I take that back, I have not done my son's pillows yet.... Of course he lives in a barracks and so far his quilt is here on one of my beds.
Anyway, when I have made pillows I will quilt the top of the pillow before I assemble it all together.
I have made shams before that were not pieced like a quilt and those I did not quilt.
I will be finishing up a quilt this spring/summer for my bed and will make a couple of shams and probably about 4-6 other pillows that will match/ coordinate/ contrast with the quilt. I am also making valances to coordinate for my bedroom and bathroom windows. I am using extra (purposely made extra for this) quilt blocks for the window coverings, I will probably kinda quilt them with the backing fabric but not put batting in the window coverings. I will quilt the tops of the pillows and will most likely make the 4-6 of them with zippers. I may do some shams that will either overlap and velcro or maybe like pillowcases. I have not fully decided what all I am doing.

I've made pillows, shams, table rounds, curtains, etc. I've never quilted a sham, but if you want it to match your bedding, then I would quilt it and then put the backing on. Easy pessey!! Would give the room a fnished look. The reason I've never done a quilted sham, is I haven't had the opportunity to make anything for myself yet!!! :lol: :lol:

I just make matching pillowcases.

I made matching shams, quilted before sewing together. I like the total finished look too!

I didn't before. But after learning the tube method for the beautiful pillow cases. I will make those to keep with my quilts. Not really shams.

It is great to give one of those with the quilt in it.

I have not before but I am going to in the future. I just took a class at my LQS where we used 3 coordinating fabrics. Most of the ladies used the fabrics from our current BOM that is going on. Because I wanted shams to coordinate with a couple different quilts, I used 3 coordinating tone on tone beiges. They turned out really elegant looking. From now on I am going to make shams using the fabrics in my quilts as I am making the quilt...then the shams will be all ready when I finish the quilt.

The directions for these particular shams were in a book. I will look up the title later on, if anyone would like it. I used fusible fleece to 'stiffen' the shams up a bit and help with the sections I used my twin-needle to quilt diagonal lines on. It took about 4 hours to make the first sham (including the time spent cutting out for both shams). I will try to post a picture later on. I think pillow shams are my new favorite thing to do!

Thanks. Fusible fleece sounds like a great idea. I may not quilt it. I just wanted it to look thicker.

I finished it last night at about 11 and hung it over the banister. My husband usually gives my quilting a polite nice but this one he stopped and said wow!

I left my camera at work but this is one I will post. It is a crazy curves in about 45 different batiks, blue, burgundy, purple, green and cream.

I like the look of pillows and quilted shams too, out of the same/coordinating fabrics :D:D:D
