I have a Janome 1600P (mid arm) on a Grace Pinnacle queen size frame. Anyway my first customer's queen size quilt the top isn't super square but not too bad so I lined it up best I could. So my question is, do you prefer to "float" your tops or do you attach your top to the roller bar? I've done it both ways, floating is faster but which way to you prefer and why? Thanks!

I attach the top. I don't trust "floating" the top, although I have heard of people who do.

I float my tops - I like being able to get under the top to smooth the batting.

I only float small items.I have a hard time keeping them straight without loading them on the bars.I have an Innova that has a roller bar in front that lifts up if smoothing the batting is needed.

I'm a floater and never have any problems. I measure each roll before and after i bast my sides.

I also float, with no problems.

I only float. I attach the backing fabric, stitch the batting to the backing and then I stitch the quilt top (same as batting). So my batting and quilt top hang free. I do stitch down as I roll. I, too, want to be able to keep my batting in line.

I am also finding its more stress free to float when a quilt top isn't really square because the top does not like to roll on that roller without wrinkling. I usually let my batting hang free too
