I am working on a bargello with blues, and blacks. It is looking like an ocean/water. My plan is to applique fish on it, but I am not sure WHEN to applique them on.

Should the applique be done BEFORE I quilt it on my frame or should the applique be put on AFTER?

    Thanks for all the help!

my 'ashleys ocean' is exactly what you describe, and when you have your bargello (background) all done is time to put life into your ocean. then when you quilt it you can add movement and detail to your ocean

You can do it either way. If you don't want the quilting to go through your applique work, add it after wards, or if you don't want to work around it. It wouldn't be hard to do if you are doing it by hand. You can mark on the quilt top where the pieces will be placed. :D:D:D

I would do it before--where you place the appliques may help determine where you placing your quilting stitches...

I would say it depends on whether you want your fish to stand out or be more blended into your design. Either way would work just fine.
