When you use a decorative stitch from your machine, does it always begin stitching at the beginning of the stitch? If not, how do you plot where in the cycle of the stitch will it begin? Is that clear as mud?? lol

My decorative stitches begin at the first stitch depending on the type of stitch. I have used them on applique, rag quilts, and on the binding.

Would this also hold true about stitches that aren't decorative? For instance, how would you know where a button-hole-stitch begins? Thanks.

Practice on a scrap mine Janome 8000 always goes the opposite of what way I think it should go when i do button holes but deco stitches starts at beginning

This varies from machine to machine. I have a Bernina, and as you sew the display shows where on the stitch you are. If you wish to re-start, it has a button that re-start the stitch.

If your machine doesn't re-start, you need to run the stitch slowly and watch how it runs.

Ex: The button hole starts up/down, left, right, forward, backward, forward, left, right

Double button hole is up, down, left, right, left, right, forward, backwards, forward, backwards, forward, left, right.

If you need to restart the stitch, you may need to select another stitch and go back to the one you wish.

Mine does not always start at the first stitch. I usually sew on a scrap of fabric till it reaches the first stitch, then start on the quilt.

Practice on a scrap to learn just where stitch begins. I find this keeps me from banging my head against the wall.

Mine starts a the beginning.
