    Default Question about using Minkee

I am thinking of making a quilt and backing it with Minkee. I have read on this board that several have done this and would like to know a bit about using the Minkee fabric.

Does it stretch and what tips and tricks would you suggest. I only have a domestic sewing machine to do my quilting on. Thank you.

I love Minkee but have not used it for backing. I want to though. My friend uses it but has it done on a long arm.

I used it to back a baby quilt and had good results with my Janome. I did a simple cross-hatch 2" apart. The quilting is more subtle as it doesn't show as much. It does stretch a bit, but I used liquid school glue to baste, so had no issues with slippage or stretching. The cut edges of the minkee will shed, so be wary and get the edges under binding as fast as possible....I quilted stabilizing lines, bound the edges to eliminate shedding, and then finished quilting.

I'm in the midst of doing my first Minkee-backed quilt. I spray based that sucker to death! I'm straight-line quilting and then I'm planning to go back and do some FMQ filling. Thus far, it's been working fine. I'll keep you posted.

I have done several quilts with minkee backing. I also spray baste, but have had no problems with stretching or slipping. I glued one and it did not hold, but I had watered that glue down too much, I'm thinking. When I use batting I quilt it more. When I don't use batting I quilt less. When the top is light-colored fabric I use batting so the backing doesn't show through to the top. Minkee plus a batting makes for a heavy quilt - not needed here in S. Texas.

Here's a link to one I did with batting: http://www.quiltingboard.com/picture...ml#post5850794
