I watched this video someone here recommend and i would like to try the flying geese done this way. My question is when cutting the rectangle and square are the width measurements the same: example: if my rectangle is cut 3 x 5 are my squares cut 3 x 3.

As long as the ratio of the FINISHED Flying Geese is 2:1 (meaning the length is twice the width), then the squares will always be the size of the width of the starting rectangle.

So a 3"x5.5" rectangle finishes at 2.5" x 5" ( length is twice width) so the two background pieces would be cut 3" square.

You example doesn't fit that ratio - your FINISHED FG would be 2.5" x 4.5", which would require TWO smaller rectangles (not squares) for the background. You would need to cut two 3" x 2.75" rectangles.

The math is always the FINISHED length of the FG divided by 2 plus 1/2" for the seam allowances.
So, for your FG .... 4.5" / 2 + .5" = 2.75"
OR
UNFINSHED FG length + .5" / 2 =2.75"


But the rectangles don't attach the same way as squares. You can't just sew them on the diagonal and fold them back. It doesn't work.

They have to be attached at an angle - my camera and scanner are on the fritz so I can't give you a photo.
