Quilt storage cupboard made from recycled old wood/or furniture
Has anyone made an open cupboard for storage of quilts from an old piece of furniture or recycled lumber; and if so, would you share a picture. Thanks

FabStripper - I have checked Pinterest and saw some very neat ideas but I thought maybe someone on this Board has something different or unique - there are so many great ideas that come from this Board. We live on a farm and I was outside yesterday "snooping" around in the buildings and found this old gray weathered door and the ideas have been swirling around in my head. Christmas is coming and will need to start dropping hints to hubby....?

An old weathered door sounds like a great idea to me, but don't forget that you'll need to seal any wood that's going to be in direct contact with your quilts or fabric. The acid in unsealed wood can leave nasty orange stains. A matte urethane wouldn't change the weathered look at all, so you might consider that as a sealer.

I used a dresser that I removed the top 3 drawers and replaced them with shelves. I kept the bottom 2 drawers for storage. On the lowest shelf, I put 3 plastic bins in which I keep my fat quarters. They are easy to see and easy to pull out the whole shelf and carry to work table. I also added hooks on the side to hang rulers. As you enter the room, it looks like a dresser with everything neat and tidy.

I saw (on this Board) a picture a few years back about using the large entertainment units for quilts. I went on Craigslist and found a beautiful one with glass doors and two drawers underneath. It's in my LR now filled with lovely vintage quilts. I have a huge entertainment unit in my family room now that we are converting to a quilting room and that huge old thing will store quilt tops and backing. If you want it to be open, just remove the doors. I like the doors on mine, though there is an open space that I do fill. I just make sure nothing is in sunlight.
