Hello Quilting Friends!

So, I am fairly new to quilting and would like to start with some small projects to familiarize myself with my new machine. I have seen several posts on pinterest about quilted pot holders. I have the basic supplies to complete these, but I'm curious as to what type of batting would be the best? Has anyone ever made any before? What type of batting did you use?

you need Insulbrite - I use a layer of that plus a layer of Warm & Natural

Insulbrite has a silver heat reflective layer that I usually put between regular 80/20 quilt batt. You might enjoy looking through Jenny Doan's YouTube videos from the Missouri Star Quilt co.

I use the silver prequilted thermal shield utility fabric for the back, a layer of insulbrite under it, and the decorative cotton on top. I hand quilt thru only the top 2 layers.

I also use Insulbrite, JAF (Joann) sells it in stores or on line.

And Amanda--if you plan to attach binding by machine, don't make your potholders too small--it's a bear trying to get them corners mitered and the ends together when you have too small of a project.

I love to make potholders. I strip piece mine, so they are quilted when they get the strips on. It goes this way.
1. The backing, at least 9 and 1/2 inches square. You can use scraps for this. (2) A layer of insulbrite (3) A layer of batting (4) a layer of inexpensive muslin (5) the strips sewed on diagonally or straight up and down.
Then square it up. I never make a pot holder less than 9 inches square.
Then bind it. I use 2 and 1/2 inch strip folded in half. Sew it on the backside, turn it over the edge, to the topside, press it and then use a decorative stitch to sew the top of the binding down.
You get an attractive potholder that isn't too fancy to use but will nake you glad every time you see it.

I use a layer of insulbright and two layers of warm and natural as the inside of my pot holders. I quilt mine pretty dense and so I need the two layers to keep the heat from transferring from the pan.

Just remember if you are new to this use cotton fabric.....poly anything ...fabric/batting tend to melt
