an inexpensive way is to write up your label on your computer- print it onto prepared for dyeing fabric- let it cure- heat set it- and stitch it on- another way is to use a micron pigma pen- they are fade resistant, permenent, acid free, archival quality- do not bleed-come in a number of colors, tip sizes- write your label on fabric, stitch it on-
i know quilters who write their label on their binding. some write with a micron pigma pen right on the back of the quilt- if it is a quilt going into a show a good place to put a label is under the hanging sleeve- it's not seen- but it's there- making identification possible-if the (unheard of) happens.

Here's a tutorial for how to make your own labels. This tute is for care labels (i.e. washing instructions) but you can easily adapt it.

Someone posted this link (www.craftygemini.com) a while back about making your own labels for free. I have used this method many times with great success.
