Default Removing shine from polished cotton fatric (chintz)

I have some pretty floral polished cotton material that I wish did not have the shine on it. I did a little reading and read that washing was not recommended, as it could remove the shine. It did not mention that it would or could deteriorate the fabric is some other way. Removing the shine is exactly what I'd like to do and wondered if anyone has done it? It is cotton right? If it worked, it could be pretty in a quilt.

I have a friend who used drapery polished cotton to make dresses. When they were washed they did not have the shine. I think you would be fine and happy with the result. Just my opinion.

Agree ... no reason you cannot wash it.

The only other negative to the washing, could be that the fabric may shrink more.
Also, that it may fray more than you are used to with quilting cotton.

I would just pre wash it as I do all of my new fabrics and use it. I have and they behave the same as any other cotton fabric.

I wonder if it would be wise to wash a sample to see how it turns out first.

I got lucky with 6 meters of Laura Ashley fabric - all cotton - that had a shine on it, chintz as you describe, for £10. This is a finish/dressing applied to the cotton when woven. I did not realise that my fabric had this on it till I arrived home. I put it in the washing machine and washed it on a cotton setting. The fabric was a little less shiny perhaps, and a little softer too when it dried. I used the fabric for various items, and left over bits in some quilts. All good. Too good a margin to pass up.
So I would wash it as normal, and use as you wish.

Thank you guys for your input. I will go ahead then and put it in the wash and see what happens.
