I'm desperate. I can't afford a new machine and I have projects to finish. My JCPenny 6501 machine is dropping stitches. Yes, it's an oldie, probably 35 years old but it's a great workhorse. I've tried everything I can think of but nothing has helped. I'm new to this area and I live south of San Antonio, TX and need a place to bring my machine for repair, preferably one that isn't going to take a month or more.

You should hop on over to the "Vintage Sewing Machine enthusiasts" section of this forum! You will find answers to your problem, over there. Beware, though, we love pictures of the vintage machines ... lol

Try re-threading your machine. Sometimes incorrect threading will cause skipped stitches. Same with having the needle in backwards.

If you have cleaned/oiled and changed needle and thread, then the timing may be off. If you have to get it repaired, phone a few shops and see how much it will cost and if they give loaners.

Check your manual for proper threading and needle placement. Retread and put in a new needle. Yesterday, my machine started making an awful noise and loopy stitches on back. I retreaded it and it sewed perfectly. The thread had jumped out of place. I don't know how that happens but it does.

I am guessing that it is the timing. Unfortunately I don't know how to fix that. I would definitely call around to some places. Have you made any "quilty" friends? Maybe one can suggest a repair shop

My only advice is to take it to someone you can trust and depend on fixing your machine with a certain time frame.
