Default Sheets?? What thread count is best?

I have recently seen great deals on 200 or 300 count new solid colored sheets. They are 100% cotton.

If you have an opportunity to buy new cotton sheets what count would you purchase?

I also wonder if those that use sheeting in quilts or for backings have had any problems?

I can't answer about the sheet count, but I use sheets all the time for backings and have never had any problems, I've even used sheets that aren't 100% cotton, still no problems.

I don't like anything higher than 200-300 for my bed. I don't think there is a "best" though. It just depends on how you want them to feel. I don't like the higher counts for me because I find them too soft.
But I want cotton only, not blends.

Years ago I wanted high thread count, percale was smoother and softer than muslin. Do they even sell muslin sheets anymore ? Now I actually sleep better on 100% cotton - I think it wicks away perspiration. No microfiber !

Are you talking about sheets to sleep on, or sheets to use as backings? I like higher thread count sheets for sleeping, the higher the better. I've never used a sheet for a quilt backing, but I've heard lots of quilters advise that lower-count thread sheets are best, they're not as tightly woven and therefore are much easier to quilt.

I've used many poly cotton blends for backings, but refuse to use anything with less than 50% cotton, as I have had problems with bearding and skipping stitches if they contain more polyester. Not sure of the stitch count, I think about 250.

I’ve used 250 and 300 count sheets as backing from walmart and have been very pleased with results.

Like Nanny's dollface, I use sheets from Walmart for backing almost exclusively. I like that I don't have to piece the back, they come in lots of colors, and the price is very, very reasonable. I haven't had problems. I've also used sheets from the thrift store. I've used flannel sheets too. I wouldn't use microfiber, but that's a personal preference for me.
