Default Shrinking or stretching a block

I have wondered what happens to a block that has been shrunk or stretched to "make it fit" the next time it is washed.

I have heard that the batting and backing will keep it stable -

but it seems to me that it would be easier - and a lot less hassle in the longer run - to use pre-shrunk fabric and get the block to be the "right" size to start with?

I agree. I preshrink and starch my fabrics. I always thought if I stretched it to fit wouldn't it shrink back to regular size it wants to be when I wash it? If I shrink it won't it become larger and bubble up when I wash it? I try not to do that.

I think it is the wear on the fabric while sewing that has distorted the block. The shrinking or stretching would put it back where it was intended. Then the quilting should stabilize it so that will not be an issue when washed. At least this is my beliefs.

I don't pre-wash because I live in apt. My blocks don't get distorted. If you have quilted a quilt with following the instruction given with the batting, your quilt won't get distorted.
