    Default Skipped Stitches

I'm trying to straight line quilt using 12 weight thread and the stitches keep skipping. Tension on a practice piece looks OK. I have rethreaded the needle, checked the bobbin, put a new needle in, changed the bobbin, but the skipped stitches continue. I'm using a Superior Titanium coated Top Stitch 90/14 needle. Thread does not seem to be catching or shredding in the needle. It sews fine when I use 50 wt. thread. Anyone have any ideas on what else I can try? I'm on a very limited budget so am trying to avoid a trip to the technician.

DD and I are going to IQF tomorrow and I'm hoping Superior will have a booth so I can get a package of 100/?? Top Stitch needles to see if that may work.

You definitely need a bigger needle. Even 100/16 needles might be too small for a 12 wt thread. I would try that first, stitching slower than usual. If you still have problems, could you do your quilting from the back? The heavy thread would likely be fine in the bobbin with standard 50 wt in the needle.

    Have fun at IQF!

I would also use a larger needle.

I've been able to use 12 wt thread on my Juki with a size 18 Jeans needle. Did straight line and FMQ.

A friend of mine was told to use a embroidery needle when she was having problems with skip stitches quilting her quilt.

Superior says use a 100/16 topstitch needle and set tension to 2.0 with 12wt thread.

you need a larger needle for 12wt and make sure you stitch length is larger as well. Also make sure to loosen your tension a lot to all thicker thread to pass through

I wouldn't use any thread thicker than a 40 with that size needle.
