I haven't bought but maybe two patterns in 2.5 years of quilting because I've made simple quilts, Mostly small ones. I like a little bit of math but if I look at a pattern that has a lot of different colors with a design that would slow me down from getting started, I figure I'm doing good by rewarding and supporting a fellow quilter for figuring out all the measurements and steps for me.

As as for rulers, I have used every one that I've bought except for the twister. But I will! It's just so darn cute , but is not on the top of the list yet.

I do the same because I love to let my inner 5-year-old come out and play.

I personally enjoy the drafting part of the quiltmaking as much as the piecing, quilting and binding. I have generally only bought a few patterns (mostly ones like Judy Niemeyer foundation piecing where there is no way I could draft it). Many quilts I can look at and figure out.

I do have a template/ruler for the 54/40 or fight block but don't tend to buy other templates. I do have quite a few measuring rulers and FMQ rulers though.

while I rarely buy a pattern, I have to admit that I get 5 quilting magazines (down from 7--I'm trying to slim it down more) and when I go through them for our Guild "garage sale", if I don't see at least 2 quilts in an issue that I may someday make, it goes. So I have a shelf of patterns for "someday"! Rulers, my rule is buy if it keeps me sane! My best example of that is my Tri-Rec--could not do several quilts without(like the Storm at Sea I'm working on now)

What I really resent is buy the pattern and then having to use my own paper and ink to print it off! I guess that's when the "cheapness" really comes out in me. I do believe in the idea that if I'm going to put all that time and labor into a product I want to have quality materials-even if that means I have some left over expensive fabric.

I spent the last few years renovating a 150 year old house, doing all the woodwork myself. After measuring twice and cutting once about a zillion times, I am quite over "figuring it out". Why reinvent the wheel? Of course, many people ask the same of me because I bake everything from scratch- just buy a store bought I'm told. The horror! 😱I guess it's just whatever floats your boat and what you enjoy.
