    Default Suggestions for template?

Re:making own templates using formula at link.

    Using this method, for 3" finished blocks I need these sizes 3 7/8 square, 3 7/8 by 7 3/4, and 7 3/4 sq..

These are not sizes sold for templates. Any suggestions on a material to use to make my own? Cardboard gradually distorts and some mylars and plastics are too flimsy.

Sheltie'sMama, Does your rotary cutter gradually shave off the edges being they are quite thin and soft?

You put the template on the fabric, then either put your ruler on top of the template aligning the edge and cut, or butt the ruler next to the template, remove the template & cut. you can also trace around the template onto your fabric & cut with a ruler. Another idea is to check at a local hardware, glass, or sign store. Some will cut plexiglass to size for a very reasonable price.

For your 3 7/8 I would us a 4 inch square template for the odd size I would use a 12 in square with 1/4 inch markings. I would use a ruler to mark the correct size with a sharpie.

Can't you just round off to the next full size, then trim afterwards...I really hate odd fraction cuts in any pattern/direction....

Some glass shops will cut plexiglass for you but then again, you might have some distortion. I use poster board myself. Works fine for me. I usually make 3 or 4 sets before I start in case it wears with marking. Plus, if I make more than one quilt from them, I have my templates already made.
