Have any of you ever used a fleece temporary backing over a permanent cotton backing? My DGS wants a cozy fleece backing on his "orange" quilt, but I would like to put a cotton backing on because I think when he is older, he would like that better.
Any suggestions on how I could back the cotton quilt with fleece that would be removable when he is older?

really? all of the adults in my world got upset with me when the kids got fleece backs, but they didnt...they wanted fleece too, it's so soft!(they call them the 'get-naked' blankets...'cause it's so soft)
that being said, if you really want to cover a regular backing with a temp-fleece back why not just put the top and fleece face together...stitch around with a larger than normal stitch (but smaller than a basting) like 6-8 stitches to inch...leave a space for turning, and turn it right side out, stitch opening closed then you could just put some ties here and there to hold it all in shape. :) just a thought...

I would just use the fleece. Sooo cuddly. :-D

A friend of mine recently made a quilt for her grand daughter. She made it "normal" with muslin backing and did all the quilting. She then added Minke on the back and just tacked it down (by hand)all over the quilt. For her the idea was not to remove the Minke later but to be able to quilt it by machine and not have a mess. I would imagine it would work for you. Just find a cotton backing you think would look good with the quilt, quilt it as desired then add the fleese or whatever. The binding would have to be removed to remove the fleese but that is easier than redoing a whole quilt.

Trust me he will never want the cotton after having the flannel. My adult children still fight over my flannel backed quilt when they visit.

I've got requests from them for their own flannel backed quilts. Now I just need the tme to get them done. :-D

My grown-up friend loves the fleece back on the quilt i made for her.

My sons love the fleece better than the cotton :lol:

Fleece is so warm and cuddly. I bet he will want to keep it.

I would go with the fleece. Everyone I know young & old, likes the fleece best. Also, with the fleece, you don't need batting or don't have to worry about a separate binding. Just fold it over & sew it down close to the raw edge. It will not ravel. I usually use a zigzag stitch.
