I'm making some quilted stockings and I've been using Sulky varigated thread. I'm now working on another stocking that I've used some white fabric in and I'm wondering if I should continue to use the varigated thread or use a solid white. Here is a photo of the completed stockings, a close up of the quilting, and a picture of the white fabric with a piece of varigated thread across it to give an idea of what it would look like.

I personally think using the pricier variegated thread is a waste on this project since the visual difference is so minimal. I personally would use the white and save the variegated for where it is noticeable.

What I normally do to test a thread is to put about a yard to the thread in a squiggle pattern onto the fabric to be used. I like the variegated thread on the color fabric but don't think it will look as nice on white.
