Isn't there a tool that you can look thru to help you figure out the value of your fabric? I think it's a red lens. (am i right?) Man, I could really use one right now! I don't have any red glass or red plastic anywhere.

If you have access to a copier you can run it thru on black and white and it'll give you an idea.

Yes, it is called a "Ruby Beholder" or something like that. I have 2 of them, I think. The first one I bought was of cardboard frame with a plastic wrap type center. I lost that one around here somewhere and bought another at JoAnn's with a 40% coupon that is a red hard plastic. They are great for figuring the value. You'd be surprised sometimes at how dark or light a fabric places against something that you thought was either darker or lighter.

You can also take a photo of the fabrics and print it up "grayscale" on your printer.

I bought a piece of red acetate from an art store for very little money and it works great.

right now I have 3 piles of the purple fabric for my hunter's star. I think I should just make 2 piles. The darker will be the stars and the lighter will be the background. I'm just so nervous starting this quilt. first scrapy. haha

a copier would work, or scan the fabric with a scanner and then change it to gray scale.
A camera would work but it would have to be a REALLLLY good photo to capture the exact color of the fabric. sometimes cameras can wash out the color or vise versa make it "truer" than it is.

3d glasses altered with two red lenses instead of a red and blue would work the same way as the red plastic

The 3D glasses are a great idea. I'm going to try that.
