I would handle it just as you outlined. You were chosen for a reason, and are doing this gal a great favor as she is getting it checked off her to do list, and helping you continue with a craft you enjoy - I'm sure it warms her heart to know her mom had a hand in this....

If you have the ability to do so, why not catalog what you don't want, take pictures and put on the internet for sale. There are lots of us out here that would be interested in fabric, quilting tools, etc. I know it would take time, but it may be worth it to you financially if you have the ability to do it.

Holy Cow! I would graciously accept the stash and anything that they offer. I would offer, as you have done, to help with the sorting, being sensitive to their recent loss. ("Your mother had great taste,,,this is beautiful fabric. ...I am sure that she wanted to make wonderful quilts for you and your family with this fabric. ...You are so fortunate to have ahd such a wonderful artist in your life.")
I would find a spot to store whatever I want to keep. Then, as many others have said, pass it on to other quilters or guilds---someone who needs or will appreciate that fabric will appear when you need them to. Do not let any of that quilting "stuff" go into the garbage dump.
I truly feel that it was meant to be.

I totally agree with hperttula. Take it and enjoy it. Keep what you know you will use and share the rest. I often see posts right here on this board from people who have a very meager stash, and I know they would appreciate your sharing some of it with them. That way, you are being blessed, and the persons you share with are also being blessed. All positive, no negative. Take it, use it, share it ... that's my humble opinion.
