    Default What type of thread...

I am going to be doing some hand quilting and am confused about thread choice. Does anyone have a favorite thread they use?

I haven't done any hand quilting in my years. I have a quantity of quilting thread from Coats & Clark but I don't think they make it anymore. It has a waxy substance to prevent it from tangling. I use it to hand stitch my binding to the back.

I do believe coats and Clark's still makes the glacé - that's what I use for hand quilting.

I use Guetermann (sp) 30 wt or Mettler 100% cotton thread.

I found the glace hand quilting thread easier to use. The added coating (which makes the thread somewhat more stiff and wiry) makes it much less likely to tangle on you as you work. If using regular thread, most quilters run it through a little box containing either beeswax or an artificial detangler (sorry, forgot the name). All of these make the thread easier to pull through the layers too. The glace thread also makes threading the needle easier. I think Gutterman makes a glace hand quilting thread.

Prism99, you're probably thinking of Thread Heaven - comes in a tiny blue box. I use both beeswax (from Joanns) and Thread Heaven, but I slightly prefer the wax.

I use whatever specifically labeled hand quilting thread comes in the color I want. I use Gutermann; Coats; Americana. The Americana brand is sold in JoAnn's and does seem to be quite a bit heavier than most other hand quilting threads but sometimes it's the right color, so I'm okay with it. Probably Gutermann is my favorite handling thread but I'm not overly particular. I also prefer Thread Heaven vs beeswax, but that's just me.
