I am making my second quilt... an amish style quilt. Each block consists of a center square...behind center square is another square turned on its side like a diamond (4 triangles), and behind the "diamond" is another square (4 triangles) in same position as the first center square. Sorry, my description leaves something to be desired. Anyway, every time I measure, measure, measure then cut, sew triangles and squares together, iron and it seems that each block is slightly different in size. What is my inexperience missing?

This pattern is called 'square in a square'. Go to the top of this page to the search function. Type in that and you will get a lot of information and links.

In the square in a square, if I remember correctly, the triangles have a bias edge. The bias edge can stretch if it isn't pinned and handled carefully. If you square up each step before adding another round, you should be alright. I did one it wool coat factory scraps years ago. I just squared it as I went because I wanted it to be more free style than exact. It turned out beautiful and it is my main "art" piece in my family room. I hand quilted it with larger stitches due to the loose weave of the wool. Enjoy the process rather than looking for perfection.

Tartan -- please post a pic of your wool quilt -- love seeing quilts done in something other than cotton.

here's Anita Grossman Solomon's cutting method for sq in a sq.

That will help with the inside two. :-D

Thank you everyone...I watched the video, very helpful...and next time I will use starch as I do think the fabric was stretching as the triangles were on the bias... so many things to remember. I will remember to enjoy the process and stop trying for perfection. Thanks again.
