How lucky are you to have a photo of your 3rd great grandfather. I don't know the pattern name but wish you luck in finding it. That is a real treasure you have.

When I first saw the quilt, crossed canoes came to mind, but this could be an old-fashioned pattern unknown to me. What a great heirloom photo to pocess. Wouldn't it be wonderful to locate that quilt.

Beth Gutcheon in The Perfect Patchwork Primer calls this pattern (a slightly more complex version) "Tippecanoe" (from the 1840 presidential campaign Harrison vs Tyler, "Tippecanoe & Tyler too").

What a wonderful piece of history. You are lucky to have it. Yup, looks similar to crossed canoes. But do some checking on historical quilts circa 1870's ish. Have fun, let us know what you find out.

What a wonderful picture! I know I treasure my old family photos, but I don't have any with quilts in them. It is just a wonderful treasure! I don't know the name of the quilt though.
