    It seems to me that the white blocks in the four corners draw the eye away from the center block. I would place them on the sides.

    The way it is pictured, I prefer #2 with the whites in the corners and top, middle. HOWEVER, you've stated that it will be set on point which changes the perspective considerably. In that case I would prefer #1 with the top left block being the top center block when you set it on point.
