Good idea, I set the trimmings aside to give away as crumbs.

Soon as I get my daughter's camera tonight I'll post one very important part: YOU DON'T HAVE TO MARK ANYTHING!

Also you can leave both the base rect. and the waste end of the square in place until you lined up and pressed and then trim both off.

Now you can trim off the rectangle’s corner if you want! I leave them on for stability unless square is white and base will show through. Extra bulk doesn't seem to matter.

Now do second side and square up! Picture #5

This method works for any diagonal corners you piece. Takes a little more fabric than other methods but the results are worth it for some of us.

Once you get comfortable and confident with these you may want to try other methods.

    Have fun! Kit

On a quilt I'm working on, I have a 2"x4" rectangle and 2 2" squares. Sometimes I can't get the 2x4 rec I should have when I have stitched the squares on. It's a kit and this is what the instructions say. Should I be making the squares bigger?

BJ, from my calculations the squares are cut at 2"? Then the rectangle should be cut 2" x 3 1/2". Probably easier to make the rectangle smaller if it would fit with the rest of the pattern. Otherwise the squares should be 2 1/4" for the 4" rectangle.
Don't you hate when kit measurements are wrong?
    Good luck!

Thanks for the tutorial. I am going to be doing a whole lot of FG for a quilt I am just starting and it will help guide me in the right direction. A little extra guidance and pictures go a long way toward success. Thanks!

Easy peasy! Your tutorial really sums it up in a nutshell!
I am sure it will come in handy :)

It seems to me that your rectangle is off, or the measurements do not include seam allowances.

If the rectangle is 2x the height - 1/2", the instruction for this should use a 3 1/2" x 2" rectangle when using a 2" square.

If the rectangle is 2"x4". the squares should total 4 1/2" length or 2 1/4" per square, to allow for overlap - does that make sense? But then proportion is off, as your rectangle should be 2 1/4" also... Something is off here.

What is your finished size flying geese block?
